After a well-received showing at last year’s E3, Prey 2 went M.I.A. from the minds of everyone when there had been no additional information about it given for months afterwards. After much speculation that the title had been shelved indefinitely, Bethesda has put out a statement saying that the game is indeed not cancelled, but has been delayed until 2013 due to not currently meeting quality standards. The full statement from Bethesda can be found below.
Development of Prey 2 has not been cancelled but the game will not be released in 2012 as planned. The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards. Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans. We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want. We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.
Bethesda unwilling to compromise their quality standards to meet a release schedule begs the question; has Bethesda ever played one of their games on release before? I’m sure PlayStation owners of Skyrim would have liked this stance, as well as everyone who played Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Rogue Warrior. Regardless, I sure hope that this delay is an actual delay for Prey 2 and not a “quietly make it disappear it for good” stance for the game.
