Gamealism: Fixes and Features

Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to make a quick post and let you, our beautiful readers, know that the comment system is now using the Disqus Commenting System as well as a few spam filters. Previously I had the comments disabled because we were getting over a thousand spam comments a day. That was just ludicrous and it would take about an hour to clear up each day, and if there were legit comments in the mix, they got wiped out too. So, now that that is all taken care of, feel free to comment away!

The Darkness II Review

The Darkness II Review
Author: Jeff McAllister

When the original The Darkness from Starbreeze Studios came out in 2007, the comic book inspired title appeared out of nowhere to surprise gamers with its over the top violence and impressive visuals. The mafia hit man, Jackie Estacado, and the supernatural powers that provide him the sentient powers of The Darkness, made for a title with a compelling story and features that were unique for an FPS. Skip ahead a few years later, toss in a new developer and a new graphical style and the sequel not only follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, but also improves on an already remarkable game in just about every way.

Girl Fight: Pulling No Punches

I received a press release today for an upcoming fighting game called “Girl Fight” from developer Kung Fu Factory and producer Microprose. Skimming over the press release, I saw that it was a fighting game with an all-girl cast, coming this spring for XBLA and the PSN (or SEN or whatever the hell it’s called now.) Figuring it would be in the same vein as Skull Girls, a game that also features an all-girl cast of fighters, albeit in a cartoon, 2D style, I didn’t really give it much thought.

Skull Girls doesn’t hold my interest because a) it is a cartoony game with all girl fighters and b) the girls look like they are all 12 years old in that anime “hey I look young but I’m really not” kind of way. Since there really wasn’t a whole lot of info within the press release, I went and took a peek at their Facebook page and that’s when my interest in the game turned from “meh” to “bring it on.”

Why the change of heart? Because the game holds no pretense about what it really is and what it has to offer.

Mass Effect 3 Demo Gameplay

We were able to procure an early code for the Mass Effect 3 Demo that will be released to the public on February 14th, and since we love you so much, we decided to take some footage of the first area and share it with you. The demo is split up into two parts and offers more than a few options when starting it so this run through may be a little different than yours when you go through.

The “SupaBoy” Handheld That Plays SNES Games

In case you haven’t noticed, we aren’t a site that is focused on gaming news, but this is a little hard to pass up. A company called Hyperkin has launched a new handheld console entitled the “SupaBoy.” Ridiculous name and possible illegalities aside, the console is basically a Super Nintendo that is hand held and plays regular SNES cartridges. Crazy right? It certainly looks it.

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Review

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Review
Author: Jeff McAllister

I’ll come right out of the gate and say that I have not played every Legend of Zelda game ever created. I eat babies, and punch kittens too. Yes, I am a bad person. I have played the original Legend of Zelda for the NES and I have played Ocarina of Time for the N64, but that’s about the extent of my relationship with Link. So with that said, let’s get into it. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Nintendo Wii has been teased and shown in bits and bobs for what seems like the entirety of the Wii’s life cycle and ironically enough, as it’s finally released, it may be the last title that anyone cares about for the system.

The story starts on an island in the Sky, known as Skyloft. It’s here that Link and Zelda attend the Knight’s Academy where Zelda’s father is the headmaster. After a little introduction to the town and its surroundings –and by little, I mean about 3 hours- Zelda vanishes and the game FINALLY starts to kick into gear. Link is contacted by a “thing” called Fi that leads him to a secret entrance in the town’s temple and learns that there is a whole other land below the clouds called “the surface.”

DUN DUN DUN.

End of Games – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

The End of Games features here on Gamealism are discussions about the final scenes of games. It shouldn’t need to be said that there are going to be spoilers, but someone somewhere will say “omg spoilers” so allow me to say it first. OMG SPOILERS! If you do not want the game spoiled, please do not continue reading. Otherwise, jump right in and let us know what you thought of the ending.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a juggernaut of a franchise that love it or hate it, we all know about it. The latest installment in the series is the final game to round out trilogy that started way back in 2007 and brought the Call of Duty series into the present day war theaters. The modern iteration of the franchise follows the role of several key characters throughout, but the main players that have been a constant through the entire series has been the three “heroes” Price, Soap MacTavish, and Nikolai on their hunt for the Ultranationalist Zakhaev and his cohort Makarov. So how did a game series that has some of the greatest set pieces and action sequences in modern gaming play out in the end?

Probably not how you thought it was going to.

Link Gets Pooped On. Seriously.

So, I was recording video for an article I am working on and stopped for a second to type something on my laptop next to me. When I was looking away from the TV, I suddenly heard a lot of beeping and was wondering what was going on. Was I being attack? Were the batteries dying in my Wiimote? Nope. To my amazement, a bird had taken a big ol’ crap on Links head. Not just a little crap, but a big coiled stinking pile of crap.

Behold the crapping of Links head.

Jurassic Park: The Game Review

Jurassic Park: The Game Review
Author: Jeff McAllister

There really haven’t been many Jurassic park games to write home about in recent memory and although the last popular game based on the franchise had a couple of things to keep gamers interested (wink), it wasn’t much of what Jurassic Park fans wanted to experience story wise. The latest game to have the Jurassic Park name slapped on it is from developers Telltale Games, the creators of the Wallace and Grommit games, as well as the recent released Back to the Future game.

Jurassic Park: The Game partially coincides with the events of the movie (until about half way through the first episode), where a duo of shady characters are on the docks beside the departing boat waiting for Dennis Nedry to arrive with the fake Barbasol can that houses the stolen dinosaur embryos. When Nedry doesn’t show- and if you’ve seen the movie, you know why- they take on the task of locating the can themselves and things go from bad to worse from there on out.

End of Games – Jurassic Park: The Game

The End of Games features here on Gamealism are discussions about the final scenes of games. It shouldn’t need to be said that there are going to be spoilers, but someone somewhere will say “omg spoilers” so allow me to say it first. OMG SPOILERS! If you do not want the game spoiled, please do not continue reading. Otherwise, jump right in and let us know what you thought of the ending.

If you’ve made it through all the button mashing and quick time events of the previous three episodes to get to the final scenario in Jurassic Park, you’ll be confronted with a tense show down between Gerry, Nima, Yoder, and a T-Rex. The final fate of the Barbasol can remains to be determined and it’s still up for grabs. As Yoder starts giving Nima the whatfor across the chops, the T-Rex shows up and interrupts the beat down. As it approaches, Harding gives the can a kick towards to docks and Yoder gives chase not wanting to lose his payday.

Billy makes the quick grab it before it falls into the drink and the T-Rex sneaks up on him as T-Rex’s are known to do. Once Yoder is T-Rex chow, the can falls back into play and everyone splits up. Now is when it comes down to decision time. As Jesse is hanging from the Skywalk, she pleads with Nima for help as the T-Rex approaches. Nima can now either A) help Jesse back up to the Skywalk or B) leave Jesse to her own devices and jump to grab the can of Dino Embryos. If you grab the can, you will get one ending, if you decide against getting the can and save Jesse, you’ll get a different ending. Which is the better all depends on how you feel about certain characters, but suffice it to say, there’s no “real” bad ending.

Well maybe for one person.
