Resident Evil Revelations Review

Author: Jeff McAllister

In recent years, the Resident Evil games have been slowly descending into a festering pit of mediocrity. The once true survival-horror series has practically changed genres over the years, becoming full on action titles and doing away with any tension and suspense the series was known for. It’s not a change that anyone wanted to see and fans were hoping to someday see the series return to its hair-raising, spine-tingling, spook-fests that the original games had been so many years ago.

Resident Evil Revelations was released to high-acclaim last year on the handheld Nintendo 3DS, although the system’s layout prevented decent controls without the add-on circle pad; the game was an actual survival-horror game that brought the series, at least partially, back to its roots. Now a year later and nearly 6 months after the craptacular Resident Evil 6, Revelations is finally getting the full screen treatment with upgraded visuals for its release on the Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

New Batman: Arkham Origins Screenshots Emerge

xl_batman_arkham_origins_logo

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has released five new screenshots from the upcoming Batman: Arkham Origins, which will be available Oct. 25th, 2013. The game, which is the third in the Arkham series of Batman games is being developed by WB Games Montréal and takes place several years before the first two games, Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, which were developed by Rocksteady Studios.

As the title implies, the game will focus the origins of Batman’s encounters with several of his Rogues Gallery members, including The Joker, The Penguin, and the main villain of the game, The Black Mask as they try to take him down on Christmas Eve. Batman: Arkham Origins will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, the Wii U, and PC.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Review

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Review
No, there isn’t a gun that shoots honey badgers…sadly.

Author: Jeff McAllister

If you could put two parts 80′s actions films, one part neon clothing of the era, and just a dash of hair band music riffs all into a blender, mix it high for ten minutes, and pour it out in videogame form, you would end up with the incredibly absurd, and somehow comforting world of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. To put it plainly, Blood Dragon is basically a mod for one of the best games released last year and while familiar, it’s not quite like anything that has been done before.

Dead Island Riptide Review

Dead Island Riptide Review
A terrifying-ly bad game.

Author: Jeff McAllister

Dead Island was a middling game that was released in the not-so distant 2011 and followed a story of four island resort vacationers who were immune to a spreading disease that seemed to raise the other island inhabitants from the dead and turn them into aggressive and voracious monsters. Although the setting and idea was interesting; the gameplay, characters, quick deaths, and just about everything else about the game was disappointing.

With Dead Island Riptide, the new title from Techland, a company that is known for dropping bigger deuces than an elephant, it is simply more Dead Island with a new playable character. There’s nothing improved gameplay-wise, characters still look like they were carved out of wood, and the new additions to the game; like the hub-based wave battles are pointless and monotonous.

Resident Evil: Revelations Story Trailer [X360, PS3, WIIU, PC]

re_revelation

With Resident Evil: Revelations coming to the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and Wii U in May, and the stinker that Resident Evil 6 was, you can expect there to be a few more trailers in the coming weeks hyping the game until its release. For starters, here’s a trailer that sort of explains what the game is about. Resident Evil on a boat. Hey, I’m sold. No, it doesn’t take much to get me.

I’ve actually been looking forward to playing Revelations since it first came out on the 3DS, but couldn’t bring myself to buy a circle pad to play it. A peripheral for one game is just not worth it, no matter how much I want to play the game. With it coming to the current gen consoles and the 82% rating it has on Metacritic for the handheld version, I’m hoping that it at least partially does what Resident Evil 5 and 6 failed to do, and that is be somewhat decent.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger; Trailer for the Upcoming Trailer

cojglogo

Techland and Ubisoft have released a trailer to announce their upcoming trailer for Call of Juarez: Gunslinger will be arriving on March 14th, 2013. Not much is said about the game in this trailer, other than you will take the role of Silas Greaves, and the game will be available on Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, and PC. It’s been far too long since there has been a good Call of Juarez game (I’m looking at you The Cartel) and hopefully Gunslinger will bring the series back to its roots, but with Techland and their past, you can never tell.

ObsCure Returns; Coming to XBLA, PSN, PC This Summer

obscure_logo

Remember that survival horror game from Hydravision that was released for the PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox called ObsCure? Well it seems the creators have set up a studio of their own called “Mighty Rocket Studios” and have decided to give the series a revamp. The new Obscure features an all-new gameplay style, visuals, perspective, but yet still retains the same name, minus an oddly placed capital letter. The once third-person, dark, and creepy title is now a 2.5 3D side-scroller with a cartoonish style. Here’s a bit from the press release:

Playable alone and in cooperative mode (local & online), Obscure lets you play as one of four unlikely heroes; students, each with unique skills and abilities that develop throughout the adventure. Geared toward action and all-out brawling, Obscure’s combat emphasizes combos, follow-up attacks, and score-multipliers! Survive against packs of monsters trying to skin you alive, discover new weapons, and complete objectives throughout a variety of huge, non-linear levels.

The new take on Obscure will have the characters returning to Leafmore Highschool and I’m sure there will be plenty of other references to the original two titles as well. The game is set to be released this summer on XBLA, PSN, and PC. For now, here’s a trailer to please your eyeballs.
