ObsCure Returns; Coming to XBLA, PSN, PC This Summer

obscure_logo

Remember that survival horror game from Hydravision that was released for the PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox called ObsCure? Well it seems the creators have set up a studio of their own called “Mighty Rocket Studios” and have decided to give the series a revamp. The new Obscure features an all-new gameplay style, visuals, perspective, but yet still retains the same name, minus an oddly placed capital letter. The once third-person, dark, and creepy title is now a 2.5 3D side-scroller with a cartoonish style. Here’s a bit from the press release:

Playable alone and in cooperative mode (local & online), Obscure lets you play as one of four unlikely heroes; students, each with unique skills and abilities that develop throughout the adventure. Geared toward action and all-out brawling, Obscure’s combat emphasizes combos, follow-up attacks, and score-multipliers! Survive against packs of monsters trying to skin you alive, discover new weapons, and complete objectives throughout a variety of huge, non-linear levels.

The new take on Obscure will have the characters returning to Leafmore Highschool and I’m sure there will be plenty of other references to the original two titles as well. The game is set to be released this summer on XBLA, PSN, and PC. For now, here’s a trailer to please your eyeballs.

Dyad Review

Dyad Review
Author: Seán O’Sullivan

What is Dyad? I’ve cleared every stage of this game, got three out of three stars on the majority of them, and I’m still not quite sure, to be honest. There isn’t a way to tidily fit Dyad’s constantly-shifting mechanics into videogaming’s nomenclature, but it’s essentially a game of racing and twitch-shooting that plays second fiddle to a visual presentation that does its best to dazzle and scupper the player in equal measure.

Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition Review

Frogger Hyper Arcade Edition Review

Not too long after the release of the hyper-stylized Pac-Man Championship Edition on XBLA and the PSN, other arcade favorites started to receive the energetic overhaul. Galaga, the wave based space shooter was next in line and although it didn’t receive the same acclaim that Pac-Man did, it was still an interesting rejuvenation for an aging game. After the success of those re-tuned arcade games, it was only a matter of time before other companies started to jump on the neon bandwagon. The most recent title to hop on is the retro arcade monster hit Frogger, with Konami releasing Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition.

Girl Fight: Pulling No Punches

I received a press release today for an upcoming fighting game called “Girl Fight” from developer Kung Fu Factory and producer Microprose. Skimming over the press release, I saw that it was a fighting game with an all-girl cast, coming this spring for XBLA and the PSN (or SEN or whatever the hell it’s called now.) Figuring it would be in the same vein as Skull Girls, a game that also features an all-girl cast of fighters, albeit in a cartoon, 2D style, I didn’t really give it much thought.

Skull Girls doesn’t hold my interest because a) it is a cartoony game with all girl fighters and b) the girls look like they are all 12 years old in that anime “hey I look young but I’m really not” kind of way. Since there really wasn’t a whole lot of info within the press release, I went and took a peek at their Facebook page and that’s when my interest in the game turned from “meh” to “bring it on.”

Why the change of heart? Because the game holds no pretense about what it really is and what it has to offer.

The Simpsons Arcade Game Review

The Simpsons Arcade Review
Author: Jeff McAllister

It’s been a long time coming, but Konami has finally brought home the nineties version of the quarter chugging brawler that featured the yellow inhabitants of Springfield, The Simpsons. While the X-Men and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade brawler titles made their way to consoles in the past couple years, The Simpsons Arcade Game was the lone holdout which surprisingly sprung to the market within days of its announcement. The previous arcade brawlers from Konami had one thing in common and that was that they still looked half-decent when they were re-released. The Simpsons on the other hand isn’t looking too pretty in this day and age, and without any visual updates, this is basically reviewing a twenty year old game.

AMY Review

AMY Review

Survival horror is a genre in gaming that can either be done well or poorly. It is rare to have a mediocre horror game. Resident Evil is done well. Resident Evil 5 is done poorly. Survival horror needs certain things to work and not all games labeled “horror” have it. AMY is one of those games that almost has it, but there’s just too many things that awkwardly and unforgivingly hold it back from attaining its goal of being even remotely frightening.

Choplifter HD Review

Choplifter HD Review
Author: Jeff McAllister

The original Choplifter was a popular title back in the early days of gaming, popular enough in fact to appear on just about every system from the Apple II to the NES and even making an appearance in the arcade. Not having much exposure since the early 90’s, other than a couple of sequels that were made for handhelds, Konami and inXile Entertainment have brought the classic back to life, giving it the HD treatment that so many other games have gotten as of late, as well as adding a few bells and whistles that give it beautiful 2D/3D visuals, animations, and some extra charm across the board.
