The Last of Us Review

Author: Jeff McAllister

The Last of Us begins with one of the most intense and emotional scenes I can recall ever having played through ever in any game, and while it slows down right after to give you some time to breathe, it’s not long before the game cranks back up again and tosses you into a maelstrom that will have your emotions flopping up and down, left and right, from beginning to end. The Last of Us is easily one of the best looking games on this generation of consoles and the performances by each and every character is a marvel. It’s a rare thing when a game finally gets released and it is even better than the hyperbole that it had built up for itself.

Resident Evil Revelations Review

Author: Jeff McAllister

In recent years, the Resident Evil games have been slowly descending into a festering pit of mediocrity. The once true survival-horror series has practically changed genres over the years, becoming full on action titles and doing away with any tension and suspense the series was known for. It’s not a change that anyone wanted to see and fans were hoping to someday see the series return to its hair-raising, spine-tingling, spook-fests that the original games had been so many years ago.

Resident Evil Revelations was released to high-acclaim last year on the handheld Nintendo 3DS, although the system’s layout prevented decent controls without the add-on circle pad; the game was an actual survival-horror game that brought the series, at least partially, back to its roots. Now a year later and nearly 6 months after the craptacular Resident Evil 6, Revelations is finally getting the full screen treatment with upgraded visuals for its release on the Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Review

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Review
No, there isn’t a gun that shoots honey badgers…sadly.

Author: Jeff McAllister

If you could put two parts 80′s actions films, one part neon clothing of the era, and just a dash of hair band music riffs all into a blender, mix it high for ten minutes, and pour it out in videogame form, you would end up with the incredibly absurd, and somehow comforting world of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. To put it plainly, Blood Dragon is basically a mod for one of the best games released last year and while familiar, it’s not quite like anything that has been done before.

Dead Island Riptide Review

Dead Island Riptide Review
A terrifying-ly bad game.

Author: Jeff McAllister

Dead Island was a middling game that was released in the not-so distant 2011 and followed a story of four island resort vacationers who were immune to a spreading disease that seemed to raise the other island inhabitants from the dead and turn them into aggressive and voracious monsters. Although the setting and idea was interesting; the gameplay, characters, quick deaths, and just about everything else about the game was disappointing.

With Dead Island Riptide, the new title from Techland, a company that is known for dropping bigger deuces than an elephant, it is simply more Dead Island with a new playable character. There’s nothing improved gameplay-wise, characters still look like they were carved out of wood, and the new additions to the game; like the hub-based wave battles are pointless and monotonous.

Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel Review

Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel Review
Much darker and less bro-y then previous titles.

Author: Jeff McAllister

Army of Two made a name for itself back in 2008 as a third-person co-op shooter that featured two characters named Salem and Rios. The two iron masked characters, coated with enough armor to stop a charging car, were the most bro-tastic bros that ever did bro and the in-game abilities of being able to fist bump, play air guitar, and high-five, bro-ed that point home. In the latest release, the third game in the series,The Devil’s Cartel, Salem and Rios have been replaced by the incredibly bland named characters Alpha and Bravo and long gone are the bro-ing bro-titudes that made the series famous. It’s no longer a lighthearted romp while murdering scads of enemies that the previous games were, and introduces a much welcomed darker side to the series.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates of Infinity Review
A Fun story when it decides to get around to it, but not much else.

Author: Jeff McAllister

Pokémon is an incredibly popular force in gaming with multiple types of titles available from the franchise. The Mystery Dungeon series, which all take the same turn-based approach, have similar initial setups, have been hit or miss throughout their many releases. The latest Mystery Dungeon game, Gates of Infinity is no different, but sadly, this release misses the mark by a mile.

Gears of War: Judgment
Author: Jeff McAllister

It’s been just over a year since the Gears of War trilogy came to an end and although the exploits of Delta Squad have come to a finale, it doesn’t mean that the COGs are done telling their tales. Gears of War: Judgment takes storytelling down a different path than past Gears game, and most games in general. It’s a prequel story that flips between the past and the further past and gives you the option to dramatically change the way the game is played out. It’s a unique and refreshing way to play through a prequel that easily could have been the usual boring throwback story.

Survival horror is a genre of gaming that always brings the most interesting- albeit bizarre and twisted- story lines to the forefront. Developer Punchline and publisher Atlus are holding nothing back with their latest, the enigmatically titled, Rule of Rose. The game follows the story of a woman named Jennifer who is riding the bus one night. A small child on the bus asks her to read him a story and then quite abruptly hops off, disappearing into the night. Jennifer being more curious than she should be, she goes after the boy, quickly realizing she is where she is not wanted.

It’s been a long time since there has been a fighting game that features the characters from the Marvel Universe. Marvel vs. Capcom and X-Men: Children of the Atom are some of the greats, but they were part of the previous generation of fighters; the 2D animated side by side style made famous by Street fighter. It took a few years for the Marvel gang to get itself into a 3D setting and their first outing is not quite what was expected. Originally dubbed Marvel vs. EA, Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects pits ten heroes and villains from the Marvel universe against seven totally new creations from Electronic Arts.

God Hand Review

Clover Studios has a track record of creating some of the most offbeat and enjoyable games available. Games like Viewtiful Joe and Okami have given the studio a name synonymous with out-of-the-ordinary games that work. Clover Studios have once again teamed up with Capcom to bring their latest quirky title to the masses. God Hand, directed by Shinji Mikami of Resident Evil 4 fame and produced by Atsushi Inaba of the Phoenix Wright series, follows the story of a mysterious man named Gene who –while trying to be a hero rescues a girl named Olivia from some thugs and gets his arm ripped off in the process. Sound a little odd? Well, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
